Equal justice under law

This is the complete and verbatim text of an article dated yesterday and updated today on the website of local television station WHDH.  This article is no longer available on their website.
REVERE, Mass. (WHDH) -Some parents in Revere were angry when they learned students were being taught about Islam and the Muslim religion.

"No religion should be taught at school. In their paper it says Allah is their only God.  That's insulting to me as a Christian who believes in just Jesus only," said Anthony Giannino.

A section of the textbook describing the beliefs of Muslims says, "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah."

Giannino immediately pulled his son out of the classroom.

"We don't believe in Allah. I  don't believe in my son learning about this here," he said.  "If my son was from another country and came here, he would have been catered to.  But where he's not being catered to, they give him an F."

The Superintendent of Revere Public Schools wrote the parents a letter explaining that it is simply part of the history in that section of the curriculum, and stated, "I want to be very clear that no religion is taught with the purpose of converting students to that religion..."

Other parents said they had no issue with the assignment.

"What is Muslim about, what is Christianity about.  That's what I teach at home.  Everybody should respect everybody else's religion," said Idalia Garcia.

"When you're talking about a specific region in the world, there's going to be traditions and there's gonna be religions that children should learn about," said Ovidio Raffa.

But some parents said they did not want their kids learning anything about Islam.

"They should also say to you, 'in history, your son is going to learn about Islam,' send out a letter," said Giannino, who also said he was starting a petition and had plenty of supporters.

The supreme law of the United States

Since the students are learning history, they should also learn about the U.S. Constitution, which is an important part of United States history.

This is the entire text of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
This means that Congress cannot pass any law that establishes a religion.

Congress violated this amendment by passing laws that gave money to the Revere Public Schools (and other public school systems) without the appropriate safeguards to prevent the Revere schools from teaching and thus establishing any religion, including Islam.

The first of my education essays

I am the author of six blogs.  One blog, called "I have to say this", has an essay called Reasons to Home-School Your Child, published on June 10, 2013.  At the top of this essay is a press release from the Michigan chapter of a group called the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).  This group objects to, and is trying to prevent any public school from allowing Christian activities.

The press release mentions blank permission slips that were given to elementary school students with instructions for them to have them signed by their parents.  Any parent who signed the permission slips would thus approve of their child taking part in Bible Study classes.

The same group, and in fact, the same chapter of the same group, also demanded that Muslim students should have the right to leave classes during the school day in order to say Muslim prayers.  That press release is also published and linked on my blog essay "Reasons to Home-School Your Child".

The following paragraph is copied from their October 1, 2012 press release.
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) said today that a Detroit-area school district has apologized for handing out permission slips for Bible study classes to elementary school students.

Social justice

If Muslim students who attend an American public school can pray while in school, then students who belong to any other faith can also pray while they're in school.

If teaching the principles and practices of the Koran is allowed in any classroom in the Revere, Massachusetts Public School System ...

... or in any other public school in America ...
... then I want to see the principles and practices of Judaism taught in the same school system,

and to the same group of students ....
They're having fun !

... along with the principles and practices of Christianity, all in the name of history, because each religion has made historical contributions to education, to civilization, and to a peaceful society.

The highest educational principles

American public schools should teach respect for American law.
"It shall be unlawful for any public secondary school which receives Federal financial assistance and which has a limited open forum to deny equal access or a fair opportunity to, or discriminate against, any students who wish to conduct a meeting within that limited open forum on the basis of the religious, political, philosophical, or other content of the speech at such meetings."

- U.S. Code, Chapter 20, Section 4071(a)

This is the first sentence of the mission statement of the U.S. Department of Education.
ED's mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.
"... by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access."

Equal access means that Christians, Jews, and Muslims are all treated the same way.  All three groups must have the same right to pray in school.

If Muslims can pray during school time and in city-owned school buildings, then so can Christians and Jews.

If one group is denied this privilege, than no group can have this privilege.

That is equal access, and that is the law.

11/04/14 UPDATE.  Link to an article. A school in California is also teaching Islam.

An Ebola case, HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the complete and verbatim text of a Reuters article dated today, October 12, 2014:
A medical clinic in Braintree, Massachusetts, near Boston was evacuated and a patient has been isolated because of his recent travel to West Africa and medical symptoms, the Boston Globe reported on Sunday.

“Ebola protocol is in place,” the Globe quoted Braintree fire official Joe Zanca as saying. The clinic was the Harvard Vanguard Medical Center, the newspaper said.
How many thousands of Americans have to die before Kenyan-born Barak Hussein Obama will admit that the security at our borders needs to be strengthened and then, to take meaningful steps to do so?

How many thousands of Americans have to die before Congress will force Kenyan-born Barak Hussein Obama to strengthen our borders, or else face an impeachment on the charge of the abandonment of his Presidential duty to protect the country from all enemies (in addition to all the other valid reasons to impeach him)?

HOW MANY ???

The link to my July 2013 essay that accuses Barak Hussein Obama of treason, usually defined as taking actions that "give aid and comfort" to the enemies of your own country.  A series of actions that he took in December 2011 fit that definition.  This is explained in detail in the essay.

This essay has many links to other pages on the internet.  This essay took me two weeks to write.

October 14, 2014 update.  Link to a October 13, 2014 article on the website of New England Cable News.  This page includes a video of an ambulance transporting the patient to a Boston hospital.

Link to an October 12, 2014 article on the Boston Globe website.  The clinic in Braintree, Massachusetts (south of Boston for those of you who are unfamilliar with the local geography) has been disinfected and reopened.

Link to an October 12, 2014 article on the website of the Boston affiliate of CBS News.  This article, which also includes a video, says that the man who entered the Braintree medical clinic with symptoms of Ebola, "likely does not have the deadly virus, officials said late Sunday."

"Likely" ?

"LIKELY" ???

This disease kills half of all the people who get it.  HALF.

How would you like to flip a coin, knowing in advance that if the coin landed "tails", that you would die a slow and painful death?

Link to a page on the website of the U.N. World Health Organization that says that the average fatality rate is around 50%.

Our government is flipping a coin about our safety and weakening our border security ???

Link to an April 1, 2011 Fox News article.  An Arizona sheriff said that Border Patrol agents were ordered to reduce the number of arrests they made.  This was before Ebola was known to exist in this country.  If the Border Patrol had continued to make the same number of arrests as they had been doing, Ebola would not be infecting as many people as it is doing now.

I want impeachment articles written for this bastard now.

I SAID NOW !!

Stop his war on us !!

Rally to stop Common Core Sept 17

This poster was sent to me via Twitter.

I copied it and pasted it here.

This is a link to a Facebook page about the rally.

There are many reasons to dislike the nationwide educational concept of Common Core.

I have written three blog pages that list reasons to home-school your child.  Common Core is one of these reasons.

Here are clickable links to these essays, all on my "I have to say this" blog:

Reasons to Home-School your Child

More Reasons to Home-School your Child

Videos of Reasons to Home-School your Child (19 YouTube videos)

Note:  I have already begun writing a fourth essay about bag public school policies and teachers.  One news article is included about a satanic group that wants to distribute literature inside a Florida public school.

This essay will be published on my "I have to say this" blog when there are a lot of news articles that are quoted and linked on it.

A description of what's in the first essay

Reasons to Home-School your Child

Opposition to prayer in a public school

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations opposes permission slips for Bible Study during school time.

Muslim Prayer in a Public School

The same Michigan chapter of the same Council on American-Islamic Relations now demands that Muslim students in an American public school be granted time away from their classes in order to pray.  Two news articles are quoted and linked.

The Pledge of Allegiance is taught in Arabic in a Colorado high school
An article is quoted.

Students in Texas were told to recite the Mexican National Anthem

An article is quoted from The Blaze.  There is also an update to this story, and also from the Blaze, dated two years later.

A school district in Southern California hired a company to spy on students

The company was specifically hired to read what the students posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

A teenager was suspended and arrested for wearing a t-shirt with "N.R.A." on it

A Breitbart article is quoted and seven other news sources are linked.

Sex between grade-school teachers and students

There are links to 12 news stories about teachers being convicted for these crimes, plus links to 19 news stories about other teachers who were accused of these crimes.  There is also a link to a news story about a teacher who was accused of having sex with at least five students at the same time.

Public School Overreaction to Toy Guns and Imaginary Guns

Students who played with toy guns or who made their hands into gun shapes and said "Bang" were suspended.  Two news stories are quoted and four others are linked.

The Wrong Reaction from a School to a Real Gun

A student who was riding a school bus saw another student carrying a gun.  He and a friend disarmed the gun-carrying student and were suspended.

Condoms Given Away in Public Schools

Four news stories are linked.

Inaccurate Textbooks

A high school class that offered Advanced Placement credit towards college credits used a textbook that inaccurately summarized the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  As I stated in the essay, no summary is necessary because the second amendment is only one sentence.

... and yet, the summary was inaccurate.  It stated that people who wanted to own a firearm had to be in a state militia.  This statement has been explicitly denied by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Inappropriate reading material

Literature approved by the Common Core educational standards for first graders taught them how to write like a political activist.  One paragraph of an article written by Michelle Malkin is quoted and linked.

Also, a book that is approved by the Common Core educational standards includes explicitly graphic written descriptions of rape, incest, and pedophaelia.  One paragraph of a blog post is quoted and linked, but I cautioned the readers of my essay that the whole blog post quotes some of those explicitly graphic written descriptions of rape, incest, and pedophaelia.

The Middle School Teacher in Connecticut

He encouraged his students to be workers instead of thinkers.  I quote and link an article in Breitbart.

One Piece of Good News

Some of the buildings that are used by the New York City School System are owned by the Catholic Church, which, in accordance with their first-amendment religious beliefs, is refusing to allow those buildings to be used for teaching sex education.  A news article is linked.

Indoctrination disguised as a grammar lesson

A third-grade English textbook taught students how to use possessive pronouns, like "Steven's apple" or "Maria's pocketbook", but all the examples referred to employees of the Federal government.  This gave these third-grade students the mistaken idea that the government possessed all these objects.  Individual ownership of property was not mentioned much.  A blog article on the subject was linked.

An Alternative Lifestyle for the Young and Impressionable

The Milwaukee Public School System encouraged all the students to dress like a member of the opposite sex for one day.  A news article is linked.

A male student at a Texas high school was allowed to attend the prom wearing a dress, a wig, and makeup.  A news article is linked.

A man who works at a cafeteria in a California public school is allowed to wear women's clothing, a wig, and makeup while he works.  A news article is linked and a photo of the man is included.

An after-school program at a Philadelphia public school allowed a man wearing women's clothing, a wig, and makeup to read a book to children.  A news article is linked and the entire article is quoted verbatim.

Criticism of Educational Materials Used by Home-Schoolers

A blog article is linked.  This article states that the College Board will attempt to link their tests, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (and others) with Common Core's educational standards.

Link to the 35-page PDF document published by the College Board.

Copied from Pat Kriegel's Facebook page

Here are just some examples of how my opponent has recently voted:

He voted against giving veterans public housing preference over illegals.

He voted for instate tuition for illegals.

He voted against residency requirements for public benefits.

He voted against holding public meetings across state before raising taxes.

He voted against having at least 2/3 vote for raising taxes.

He voted against providing a valid social security number to be eligible for public housing.

On November 4 please consider the issues when voting. The current Representative is not representing us!

I want to be Your voice on Beacon Hill because right now we don't have a voice.  Thank you!

Vote for Pat Kriegel in the Norfolk 3rd District

The organization of the Massachusetts House of Representatives

Massachusetts has 14 counties.
Link to a map provided by the Massachusetts Secretary of State. (PDF format)

This is Norfolk County.

Pat is running as a Republican for Norfolk County's 3rd House District.

These areas make up the district:

Holbrook: Precincts 2, 3, 4;
Quincy: Ward 2, Ward 4: Precinct 5;
Weymouth: Precincts 5, 6, 9, 12, 16

Who is Pat Kriegel?

Copied from her campaign website:

"For many years I have worked on campaigns for many different candidates.

The first time I volunteered was for Paul Tsongas at his headquarters in the Statler Office building a long, long time ago.

I would later go door to door in Quincy and Norwood for Michael Bellotti when he first ran for Norfolk County Sheriff.

Yes, like many born and raised in MA, I was a Democrat.

One thing I never did was vote for Teddy after Chappaquiddick.  I would leave it blank or vote for anyone who ran against him."
"Then the Democratic Party changed, it is no longer the Party my parents supported, it is no longer the Party of JFK, who said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”.  To me Ronald Regan had the same philosophy, he inspired Americans to rely on themselves and not the government, and so I voted for him.  President Regan said “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me” and that is so true for many.

In 2009 I was now a grandmother and saw what was happening in our wonderful country and started voicing my concerns on social media for the next four years until I went to see Jeff Kuhner of WRKO and Scott Brown at Bentley College.  The theme was just don’t sit there and complain, "get up and do something" and so I am doing something to help save our state from the insanity that liberalism has become."

Link to Pat's Facebook page.

If you want to volunteer to help the campaign, please e-mail her.

Pat.Kriegel@Yahoo.com

Link to the page on her campaign website that allows you to make contributions to the campaign.

His name is Elbert Guillory.

He is a Louisiana State Senator.

Like Pat, he was once a Democrat.

Listen to him tell you why he decided to become a Republican.

Pat and Elbert didn't leave the Democrat party, it left them.
If you are a Democrat, your party will leave you, too, sooner or later, and the only people who will be left in the party will be loud, angry extremists.

Pat's Opponent is a Democrat

He is loud and angry.

He is Ronald Mariano

He is running for the 3rd Norfolk District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Ron, it's not smart for a man in your condition to run too hard.

You were born in 1946, not 1976.

Try to keep up with a grandmother.

When you feel like you're out of breath, sit down and rest.
Drink some water and rest some more.  Be sure to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure.

Ron, when you think that you're feeling better, don't try running again.  Start by walking slowly and see how you feel.  Call your doctor and make sure he knows that you're exercising.

Don't worry about Pat, she has lots of energy because she will fight long and hard for her issues when she's a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

A Japanese grandmother can run faster than most teenagers.  Link to my essay about this wonderful woman.

Reasons to vote for Pat

The Minimum Wage Scandal

As the Majority Leader in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Ron arranged for this "legislative body" to abandon its' duty to the voters.

The Massachusetts Legislature approved, on a voice vote, an increase in the so-called "minimum wage".

These are the first four paragraphs of the Executive Summary of a report that was produced by Suffolk University's Beacon Hill Institute: (PDF format)
A bill introduced by Representative J. James Marzilli would raise the Massachusetts minimum wage in two stages from $6.75 per hour to $8.25 per hour.  The bill would also index the minimum wage to consumer prices and provide for a commission to consider further increases in the minimum wage to “reflect existing economic conditions in the commonwealth.”

Supporters of the bill have distributed an “Economists’ Statement Supporting an Increase in the Massachusetts Minimum Wage.” This statement claims that the increase would yield benefits to labor and business alike and downplays any worry about job losses that the increase might bring about.  But, while some of the 50 signatories are among the state’s leading economists, the statement ignores a consensus among labor economists that increases in the minimum wage do, in fact, destroy jobs.  Indeed, one of the signatories, Professor Karl E. Case of Wellesley University, has coauthored a textbook in which he describes exactly how the job losses come about.

The Beacon Hill Institute estimates, conservatively, that the proposed increase in the Massachusetts minimum wage would cost the state 26,970 jobs.  The preponderance of this loss would be among low wage workers, women workers and workers 20 years old and older.

Most workers affected by the increase would, to be sure, keep their jobs and, in doing so, enjoy higher wages.  The wage gain for these fortunate workers would be about $405 million.  But that gain would be largely offset by $371 million in wages lost by the workers who, as a result of the higher minimum wage, ended up unemployed.

If you're not an economist, here's an easy way to understand this issue.

All you have to do is answer three questions.
  1. If the minimum wage goes up automatically, does that mean that the income of the stores and restaurants that pay people those wages will go up automatically?

  2. If the income of the stores and restaurants doesn't go up,
    • but if their expenses do go up, because they're forced to pay more in hourly wages to their employees,

then how can these stores and restaurants avoid laying off some of the people that they hired?

  3. Some of the stores and restaurants that were barely profitable while paying the current minimum wage to their employees will be unprofitable when the law goes into effect.  Do you expect unprofitable stores and restaurants to stay open?  Pat doesn't, but Ron does.

Whenever the minimum wage goes up, it's an increase in the costs for all the small businesses, including stores and restaurants, that have to pay those people, without any corresponding increases in the ability of those stores and restaurants to pay the money.

Ron voted to increase the expenses of Massachusetts stores and restaurants without increasing any of their revenue, the money they will need to pay for those higher expenses.

Illegal immigrants in public housing

They're illegal because they didn't get the approval of the United States Customs and Immigration Bureau when they entered this country.  Few other countries in the world have such poor border security, and the only categories that these countries are good at are poverty and crime.

Illegal immigrants were living in public housing even as long as five years ago.  Link to a story in USA Today dated January 1, 2009.  Ron has been tolerating this at least five years as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and he has made this a policy.

Some of those illegal immigrants, like Obama's Auntie Zitunie, live here in Massachusetts-subsidized public housing.

And yet, the men and women who have been discharged from military service, many of whom now need public housing, aren't getting it because the illegal aliens are ahead of them in line for any available units in public housing in this state.

Charlie Baker, one of the Republican candidates for Governor, had a confrontation with the director of a "housing collaborative" in Chelsea, a city that was run so poorly, management of this city was taken away from it's mayor and given to a receiver.  Link to a story dated September18, 1991 in Education Week. Link to a story dated August 29, 2014 in the Chelsea Record about the confrontation.

Massachusetts State Senator Bob Hedlund wants to change this.  These are the first three paragraphs of a story dated August 17, 2014 in Wicked Local Marshfield.
In Massachusetts, illegal aliens are still accessing public housing.  State Sen. Robert L. Hedlund (R-Weymouth), once again, wants to change this.

Hedlund offered an amendment to address the issue of illegal aliens securing state subsidized housing.

The amendment passed in the Massachusetts State Senate, but failed to earn support from the conference committee, Hedlund said.
Guess who was responsible for naming the legislators that served on this committee from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and earned extra pay and benefits for doing so?

That's right, Robert Mariano!

Newsflash to the Democrat Party!  Most Americans don't want illegal children in their town's public schools.  Part of the reason is because there are a lot of 20-something and 30-something adults (pretending to be children with the enthusiastic approval of the federal government) sitting next to their children in those public school classrooms and meeting them in school locker rooms.

Link to a story dated August 16, 2014 in the Washington Times, which says that the illegals are getting "first-class treatment" at the expense of taxpayers.  They're also getting their first-class treatment at the expense of homeless veterans.

These three paragraphs are part of a story in the Lowell Sun dated August 28, 2014.  The link to the story is after the story.
The issue of housing preference for legal residents was recently debated by state lawmakers, with both branches passing similar plans in welfare reform and housing bond bills. In both instances, the proposals did not make it to the final version of the bills.

House lawmakers last year overwhelmingly passed a Republican-backed provision that would prevent people who are ineligible for federal public housing from receiving state public housing. After it was adopted as part of a $1.4 billion housing bond bill, the amendment was removed from the final version of the bill.

As part of a welfare reform bill last year, the Senate also passed a similar proposal that would align Massachusetts with federal public housing rules that give priority to citizens and legal immigrants. The proposal did not make it into the final version of the legislation.

Guess who was responsible for removing the amendments to those pieces of legislation which made it hard for our homeless veterans to have access to public housing?

That's right, Robert Mariano!

Here's to you, Pat.

Stephen Grossman Mark Fisher
Martha Coakley Charles "Charlie" Baker
Donald Berwick

Jeff Kuhner, the host of this rally, also hosted another rally in May.  This rally was held to free Justina Pelletier from her kidnapping by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.  Photos and a video are available on this website.  Hundreds of people came, and their voices were heard in the Governor's Office.  He freed Justina from her imprisonment.  She is now back with her family, getting treatment for the medical conditions that the State of Massachusetts denied even existed.

Jeff sent many invitations to Charlie Baker, a candidate for Governor, but he declined to appear.

A Boston lawyer will assist with Detroit's bankruptcy

This is the complete text of an article that was published today (April 22, 2014) on the website of the United Press International.  Most people know this organization by its' acronym, U.P.I.

Both of the links in the following paragraphs were in their original article.
A U.S. bankruptcy judge has tapped Martha Kopacz of Phoenix Management Services of Boston and former New York Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch as consultants for Detroit's bankruptcy plan.

Ravitch helped New York get through its fiscal crisis in the 1970s and was assigned by the court to help evaluate that city’s debt-cutting plan.  Kopacz, as a paid expert witness, will be asked to decide if the city's bankruptcy plan is feasible and whether the assumptions that underlie its forecasts are reasonable, according to the court filing.

Kopacz said her firm’s estimated fees are $800,000 to $1.2 million for 4 or 5 people working up to 60 hours a week and factoring in a 10% discount.  They will be expected to submit a report June 24 and Kopacz will be available to depose other parties involved in the city's bankruptcy case.

Judge Steven Rhodes took up Ravitch's offer to help the city for free, but did not agree to employ his non-profit Ravitch Group, which he formed with three colleagues.

Ravitch said he will look at the finances of the city and will determine how they were derived, ensuring that the Detroit's finances are sustainable post-bankruptcy.

“You don't solve an economic problem by borrowing money,” Ravitch said. “That's lesson 1, lesson 2 and lesson 3.”

Detroit has claimed that bankruptcy was a necessary step, after years of declining population and the disappearance of manufacturing jobs.  The city has been unable to pay back its debts and is still providing minimum levels of service, such as police and fire protection.

The bankruptcy case is set to come up in July between the city and its creditors.

**********

If I may, I'd like to repeat something that former New York Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch said.

“You don't solve an economic problem by borrowing money."

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how sensible this advice is.

I also cannot emphasize strongly enough that this advice can be implemented by cities as easily as it often is by families, after converting it grammatically from negative language to positive language.

You solve economic problems by encouraging the growth and development of the businesses in your city (or your state, or your country).

I also cannot emphasize strongly enough how terrible the consequences will be for every city and town that ignores this advice.  Families who ignore this advice see the consequences, too, but they usually feel the pain of the consequences much faster than cities, so families usually (but not always) learn new and better habits much faster than cities.

Some cities, like the City of Detroit, did ignore this advice and are now suffering for their foolish policies, enacted and implemented over decades.

This is a link to another essay of mine, called We're ignoring 200-year-old wisdom.  I published it in November 2012.  This essay mentions the consequences of other cities that, like Detroit, also ignored this very sensible advice.  The person who gave the very wise advice two centuries ago was Benjamin Franklin, who was possibly the most important American who never became President.

The City of Detroit followed some very foolish advice.  It tried to get more tax revenue by raising taxes on the wealthiest city residents.  This advice always fails, because the wealthiest residents of any city, any state, and any country will, when taxed too heavily, simply spend a small percentage of their very large collection of financial assets and use them to move out of that city, that state, or that country.  I published an essay called Taxes, the wealthy, and the freedom to flee, in March 2013, which details this inevitable process.

Cities, states, and countries, ignore this advice at your own risk

That includes the City of Boston and the State of Massachusetts.  I live in Massachusetts, and I am not happy with the financial situation in my own state because my own governor is also ignoring this very sensible advice, which means that if these policies continue, my own state will also suffer the financial consequences of those foolish policies.

My governor, who smirks instead of smiling.

In order for any city, any state, and any country to have financial success and political stability, it must encourage the growth and development of its' middle class, people who have marketable job skills and who work for the companies that are owned by wealthy people.

Do not encourage wealthy people to leave by taxing them too heavily.  When they leave, they will not continue to operate their companies, so the middle-class people who work for them will lose their jobs.

This is a link to an essay that I published in November 2012 called America grew with the help of craftsmen.   The crafts that are mentioned in this essay became so valuable to the earliest Americans, there are now many people who are named for those crafts.  Those jobs helped this nation grow and succeed in a financial sense, and the people who worked at those jobs, people who loved those crafts and worked hard to improve them, now have descendants who are part of today's middle class, still working hard at the crafts they love and still trying to use the income from those middle-class jobs to feed their families.

Cities, states, and countries: If you make it easy for wealthy people to own and run businesses in your jurisdictions, then your jurisdiction will have financial success and political stability.

If, on the other hand, you make it hard for business owners to run their businesses in your jurisdictions, they will leave, and you will not be able to blame anyone but yourselves.

Link to an essay that I published in March 2013 called Chile's economy is growing faster than ours.

Link to an essay that I published a few weeks later, called Some ideas for growing the United States economy.  This essay compared Chile's policies with ours and concluded by offering the same advice.  Any city, state, and country that wants financial success must adhere to reasonable policies.

In other words, you don't solve an economic problem by borrowing money.  If you are a mayor, a governor, or a president, you solve economic problems by doing everything in your power to encourage the growth, development, and the permanent location of the businesses in your city, state, or country.

That means encouraging a free and minimally-regulated marketplace, too.

Link to the second essay I ever published on a blog, called Freedom of choice in the marketplace, published in June 2012.  This essay shows, in detail, that in any truly free market, consumers also have the freedom to flee from products that they do not want to buy, which gives the producers of those products a real economic incentive to produce and to market things that people want to buy.  This means that consumers have inherent protections against harmful products.

Poison will not kill many rats, and bad products will not harm many consumers for the same reason.  The first consumers who bravely try a new product will tell his or her friends whether he or she liked it.

Free markets in any city, state, and country will always produce economic success in that city, state, and country.

Always.

Updates, arranged in the order that I added them

April 18, 2016

This is the first paragraph of an April 16, 2016 review of a book titled "To Broke and Back", about Detroit's bankrupcty.
Early in Detroit’s municipal bankruptcy case—the largest in U.S. history—federal bankruptcy court judge Steven Rhodes rejected a settlement that would have paid two banks $165 million.  The banks had loaned money in a complex deal to enable Detroit to keep paying bloated municipal pension obligations.  It was “too much money,”  Rhodes declared.  If the city won’t stop making bad deals on its own, the judge said, then the court would force it to stop.  It was precisely this type of judicial head-slap that Detroit needed.  As Nathan Bomey chronicles in the excellent Detroit Resurrected, 50 years of mismanagement and magical thinking had made the Motor City insolvent, with unfunded retiree pension and health-care liabilities totaling an astounding $9.2 billion—about nine times Detroit’s annual budget.

December 1,, 2016

These are the first three paragraphs of a July 19, 2013 National Review article.
With Detroit filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, everybody knows major root-canal cutbacks are coming.  Cutbacks of out-of-control government spending, pensions, and health benefits. Major cutbacks.  We know that.

We also know that the downfall of Detroit is again proof positive that the public-union collective-bargaining model has utterly failed.  Unions just loot the benefit lock box at taxpayer expense.  That was the message of Governor Scott Walker’s victorious crusade in Wisconsin.  If any good comes out of the Detroit debacle, it will be the spread of that message across the country.

But there’s another important point here.  If Detroit is to truly recover, a growth program of tax-free investment incentives must be part of the process.  Specifically, Detroit should be made a tax-free enterprise zone, along lines proposed years ago by the late Jack Kemp.

August 29, 2017

These are the first four paragraphs of a CNBC story published today.  All of the links in these paragraphs were in their story.
A deserve for tiny homes has been sweeping the nation, spurred in part by the high cost of owning and the desire to live simpler, with less.

In Detroit, the fad is serving a different purpose:  An opportunity for low-income residents to become homeowners, reports Jeffrey Brown of PBS NewsHour.

Led by Cass Community Social Services, the local project is one of many efforts to help rebuild the metro area after it became the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy in 2013.  The non-profit bought 25 vacant lots from the city for $15,000, total, and intends to spend $40,000 to $50,000 building a tiny home on each, with the help of a volunteer workforce.

The homes will range from 250-square-feet to 400-square-feet.  But the cramped quarters don't appear to be a turn off.  Hundreds of low-income earners have already applied to live in the seven tiny homes that are fully built.
Note 1: I don't approve of the use of the word "deserve" being used as a noun in the first paragraph, but I didn't change it because I follow some self-imposed standards as a writer.  One of them is that when a writer that I'm quoting uses bad grammar, I allow that writer to use bad grammar.  I reserve the right, as a writer, to refuse to quote someone, for any reason, including the frequent use of bad grammar in one published written work, even if that written work is published by CNBC.

Note 2: I do approve of the use of private funds to build low-income housing in a low-income area, such as Detroit.  If it is well-managed, this effort may result in these people being homeowners who feel like they belong to a physical comminity and who may thus have a reason to maintain it.

Tolerance and intolerance

Introduction

First, I'm taking the word "gay" back.  It now means being happy with a light heart, as someone would be if he or she, without any pressing duties or worries, was walking through a meadow filled with flowers and birds, with patches of trees with which to get some shade if the warm sun got too hot.

"Intolerance" means an unwillingness to tolerate someone else's beliefs.  I am male.  I have always been male.  A doctor can confirm this.  If you want further proof, an examination of my chromosomes can confirm this.  If you want me to "change my mind" about my gender, you are intolerant.

I desire to have the romantic company of women.  I have desired the romantic company of women since I became an adult.  For ten years before I became an adult, I desired the romantic company of girls my own age.  If you want to change my mind about that, you are intolerant.

There are large numbers of people who also desire the romantic and sexual company of people of the opposite sex.  They know who they are and they are proud of who they are.  If you want to change their mind about that, you are intolerant.

Tomorrow, a group of veterans, called the South Boston Allied War Veteran's Council will honor Boston's Irish roots by holding a parade through Sough Boston.  They love living in Boston.  They love being Irish, at least for one day.  They love being veterans.  Their parade gives them the opportunity to express their triple pride.

A short history of this holiday

This is the reason why they celebrate St. Patrick's Day, copied from their page on the history of the parade. The photo was on their page, but I moved it to a different part of my page.

General John Henry Knox brought the 55 cannons captured at Fort Ticonderoga.  In March, the troops positioned the cannons on Dorchester Heights.

They had cut down trees to cannon size, hollowed them out and blackened them over fire to look like cannons.  Surprise was just around the corner....
On March 17th, 1776, orders were given that if you wish to pass through the continental lines, the password was "St. Patrick".

The British had seen all the cannons on the Heights and left Boston.

Dorchester Heights, Boston, MA
The South Boston Allied War Veteran's Council celebrates being Boston residents, being veterans, and being Irish because all those qualities are a part of their history.

The British, fooled by the fake cannons, left the city of Boston.

They evacuated the city.

In 1901, over a century ago, the City of Boston decided to celebrate this historic victory with a parade.  If you want the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council to change the reason for having their parade, or the message of the parade, you are intolerant.

This next text is copied from another page on the website of the South Boston Allied War Veteran's Council.
1901 was the very first celebration of Evacuation or St. Patrick's Day Parade. It was on the 125th Anniversary, on the day General George Washington and the Continental Army forced the British to end the occupancy of Boston.

Defining tolerance and intolerance using examples

Tolerant Intolerant

Knowing and celebrating who you are. Trying to convince somebody that they're someone else.

Celebrating living in Boston. Forcing a Boston resident to celebrate living in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles

Celebrating three Red Sox World Series Championships since 2000 and now a fourth Championship as of 2018. Forcing Boston residents to say that they'd rather live in New York City.

Celebrating being Irish, at least for a day.  BTW, I'm part-Scottish, and since the Irish and the Scottish are both Gaelic, it's going to be easy for me to join in the celebration. Forcing a resident of South Boston to celebrate any other heritage on St. Patrick's day.

Celebrating being veterans.

Forcing a veteran to celebrate those who desecrate our country's flag, dishonor those who have served our country in uniform, and those who, while wearing the uniform of their country, disobey the legal orders of their military superiors.

Hosting and taking part in a parade in Boston that celebrates being a Boston resident, being Irish (at least for a day), and being a veteran. Forcing the South Boston Allied War Veteran's Council to have any other message, political, sexual, or social, in their parade.

News stories about the dispute

These are the first three paragraphs of a March 15, 2014 U.P.I. story.
BOSTON, March 15 (UPI) -- The Boston Beer Company, maker of Sam Adams Beer, has announced it will not be involved in the city's St. Patrick's Day Parade, because gay groups are excluded.

Boston Brewing's decision came after a Boston restaurant, Club Cafe, said it would no longer serve Sam Adams, the Boston Globe reported.  The restaurant's move quickly gathered online support and Boston Beer released a statement Friday saying it was ending its involvement in the parade, scheduled for Sunday.

Participation by homosexual groups has become a hot issue in both Boston and New York this year.

These are the last three paragraphs of the same story.
New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has said he will not participate in the country's largest St. Patrick's parade, set for Monday, and the city council president said individual members can march but there will be no official council president.

In Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh tried to negotiate a settlement that would have allowed a gay veterans group to march.  He has said that as things stand he will not be there.

Organizers of both parades have denied being homophobic and have said gays and lesbians are welcome as individuals.
Remember, the organizers of both parades have the legal right to allow or deny the participation of any group because both parades are political speech and thus protected from the anti-discrimination laws of any state or the United States.

Link to Hurley vs. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Group of Boston, Inc., docket #94-749, decided June 19, 1995 by the U.S. Supreme Court.  This case is published on the Oyez website.

These paragraphs were copied from a website that focuses on legal issues.  Oral arguments in Hurley v. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Group of Boston, Inc. were held on April 25, 1995.  The decision was announced on June 19, 1995.
Q. Did a Massachusetts State Court's mandate to Boston's Veterans' Council, requiring it to include GLIB members in its parade, violate the Council's free speech rights as protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments?

A. Yes. A unanimous court held that the State Court's ruling to require private citizens who organize a parade to include a group expressing a message that the organizers do not wish to convey violates the First Amendment by making private speech subordinate to the public accommodation requirement. Such an action "violate[s] the fundamental First Amendment rule that a speaker has the autonomy to choose the content of his own message and, conversely, to decide what not to say."

Link to two very tolerant press releases by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council.

This next message is for those of you who, by this definition, are intolerant.

I have a suggestion for you.  You can take it or leave it.

Why don't you find a good lawyer and sue the South Boston Allied War Veteran's Council in court?

As a temporary Irishman, I wish you good luck.  Link to a post that mentions my ancestry.

Elizabeth Warren, foolish redistributionist

Copied from an article dated March 6, 2014 on the Think Progress website:

U.S. Senator Warren (supposedly representing Massachusetts) ...
... plans to introduce a bill that would create an “America that invests in those who get an education” by revising the tax code and enacting the Buffet rule.

The Buffet rule is named after billionaire Warren Buffet and would establish a minimum tax on income in excess of $1 million.  The measure, which never got out of Congress, raises approximately $50 billion in revenue and ensures that millionaires do not pay lower tax rates than middle-class families.
She doesn't get it.

She just doesn't get it.

Most Americans make economic decisions with a lot of knowledge of the potential gains and losses, due to the unquestionable fact that there is so much knowledge that is available to the average American.  Senator Warren underestimates the education of the American consumer, investor, and even the students.  There are many things that Elizabeth Warren knows nothing about, and that includes most of what she should know in order to do her job as a U.S. Senator.

The American economy is dynamic

People in this country are allowed to make changes to their economic situations whenever they feel like it.  Many people have done it, some voluntarily, others were encouraged to do so by the benefits of various government welfare programs, and still others were forced to accept these benefits because their income shrank.

Over the past five years, there has been a very large-scale shift in the middle-class.  Many people who were working full-time jobs before Obama was elected are now working one or even two part-time jobs, thanks to a feature of the Unaffordable Care Act which imposes a harsh tax on any company that has 50 or more employees.

As a direct result of this harsh tax, companies all across the United States have reduced the number of hours that individual employees work down below the 30-hour threshold that is mentioned in the law.  These companies are thus taking advantage of the dynamic U.S. economy, and the reason why they are doing it is because this makes good business sense.

Elizabeth Warren is a classic redistributionist

She wants to rob from the rich, with a public goal of helping the poor.  If this is done more-or-less voluntarily, it is socialism.  If, however, the wealth is confiscated by a government, then this is Karl Marx's version of Communism.

Copied further from the same March 6th article.  Notice that the writer, Mason Atkins, doesn't even call it Elizabeth's plan.  He calls it "Warren's plan" and "the Buffet rule".  This is simply a cowardly coverup.  Warren Buffet didn't push very hard for the redistribution of wealth, but Elizabeth is pushing.
Warren’s plan would allow students with outstanding student loans to refinance at lower rates.  The cost of the change would be covered by a “dollar for dollar” effort where for “every dollar the Buffet rule brings in, we use that dollar to refinance student loan debt,” she explained.  She estimated that recent graduates who borrowed the maximum in undergraduate loans could see their payments drop by $1,000 a year and total interest paid over the life of the loan could be cut nearly in half.  Students with graduate loans or borrowers from private lenders would save even more, Warren projected.

Warren Buffet's "rule" and his projections were forced on him by a president who has been proven to use the I.R.S. to harass his political opponents.  Mr. Buffet has written extensively about wealth creation, and he has authentic first-hand experience.  The mutual fund that he began decades ago now has shares that are being bought and sold at a price of over $180,000 each, up from "only" $170,000 three months ago.

Here are some price charts of the Barkshire Hathaway Class A shares:
Three months Six months
One year Two years Five years

Please notice that five years ago, according to this chart, the price of this mutual fund was "only" around $80,000 per share.  Since then, shareholders have seen the price grow by an additional $100,000 per share.

Warren knows how to make money, and it isn't by taxing the wealthy people who include his earliest and thus wealthiest shareholders.

March 25, 2015 update

Elizabeth Warren's student loan plan has been defeated.

Copied from an article published today (March 25th) in The Hill, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill, where Congress does its' business.
Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked an effort by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to attach an amendment aimed at lowering student loan rates to the budget.

Senators voted 46-53 against Warren's amendment to the Republican budget resolution.

Warren's amendment would have allowed people with college loan debt to refinance at interest rates from the 2013-2014 academic year.  The Massachusetts Democrat, who is rejecting calls to run for president, said the move would allow undergraduates to refinance their loans to a 3.9 percent interest rate, with a "slightly higher" rate for graduate students.

"Millions of borrowers are still stuck paying interest rates at 6 percent, 8 percent, 10 percent and even higher," she said.

Her plan would have been paid for by requiring millionaires to pay at least a 30 percent effective federal tax rate.
Her plan would redistribute money from millionaires to college students.

That's redistribution, which inflicts economic punishment on those millionaires for the "crime" of having a lot of money.

January 7, 2020 update

These are the first four paragraphs of a January 7, 2020 Washington Times story.  The links in these paragraphs were in their story.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts on Tuesday rolled out a proposed rewrite of U.S. bankruptcy law, including a repeal of certain provisions of a 2005 law supported by 2020 Democratic presidential rival Joseph R. Biden.

Ms. Warren’s proposal would make it easier for debt-ridden Americans to seek bankruptcy and. For example, it would reverse a provision in the 2005 bill that required people to seek pre-filing credit counseling.

“Thanks in part to the 2005 bankruptcy bill, our current system makes it far too hard for people in need to start the bankruptcy process so they can get back on their feet,” Ms. Warren said on her campaign website.

She also wants to make student loan debt dischargeable during the bankruptcy process, akin to other consumer debts, and make it easier for people to keep their homes and cars during the bankruptcy process, among other changes.
CNBC published a similar story on the same day.

The biggest reason for student loan debt is because greedy college professors, like her, were paid far more for their services as a teacher than they were worth.

These are the first two paragraphs of a January 12, 2012 Associated Press story that was published on the MassLive website.  The link in the first paragraph was in their story.  Note: This story was corrected by the Associated Press in March 2019 to show the accurate dollar value of her stock in IBM.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren was paid $429,981 as a Harvard law professor from 2010 to 2011 and got nearly $134,000 in consulting fees on legal cases in 2010.

Warren's new personal financial disclosure report filed recently with the Senate shows she got $90,000 from a Florida law firm for her work as an expert witness against credit card companies in an antitrust case.
When any university has to pay $430,000 to one person to teach one class, all of the students at that university will be forced to pay a higher amount of tuition, room and board, and other fees to that university.

January 15, 2020 update

These are the first four paragraphs of a January 14, 2020 Washington Examiner story.  The link in the second paragraph was in their story.
Elizabeth Warren promised to cancel student loan debt for up to 42 million Americans on the first day of her administration, bypassing Congress to do so administratively.

The Democratic presidential candidate said, in a plan released Tuesday, that she would direct her secretary of education to "compromise and modify" federal student loans consistent with her plan to cancel up to $50,000 in debt for 95% of student loan borrowers.

"We can’t afford to wait for Congress to act," Warren said in the plan.

The Massachusetts senator said that the Education Department, through the Higher Education Act of 1965, already has the authority to cancel student debt.
As I said on Twitter in response to a tweet that included a link to this story, any bank whose student loans are cancelled by any U.S. President will refuse to make new loans on the legitimate grounds that these loans will instantly become financial losses for those banks, possibly leading to the financial failure of those banks.

Elizabeth's friend Barak also wants to redistribute wealth

The first YouTube video was recorded, with Barry's own voice, in 1998.

In the second video, you will hear Barry's voice as he called in to a Chicago radio station in 2001, fourteen years ago.  The transcript of his words is printed onscreen in the video.

America, love it or leave it

I really hate to break the bad news to Elizabeth and her redistributionist friend Barak Hussein Obama, but some of the wealthiest people in this country have had enough of the "tax the rich" dreamers and schemers.

They're leaving the United States.

This is the first sentence in an article dated March 11, 2014 on the Finance Page of the Yahoo website.  There are brief interviews with five former Americans later in the same article.
3,000 Americans around the world renounced their citizenship last year.  Meet five U.S. citizens who have given up their passports -- or are thinking about it -- to escape an overly complicated tax code.
When you see the phrase "overly complicated tax code", remember the Dodd-Frank law (PDF 848 pages, not counting the regulations), which regulated a very large portion of the American banking sector that was functioning with already high government regulations, and remember the thousands of pages of the Unaffordable Care Act, (PDF, 906 pages, not counting the regulations), which is now bankrupting millions of Americans because of higher insurance premiums caused by unnecessary "benefits" like pregnancy care for single men and senior citizens.  Are single men likely to get pregnant?  How about senior citizens?

Leaving America and moving to Belize

These are the first two paragrraphs of an article dated November 24, 2013 on the Huffington Post website.  All links in these paragraphs were in their article.
Expats have settled all over Belize, but one spot is starting to earn lots of attention lately... Corozal, the northernmost of Belize's six districts.  It has the second-largest population of the districts with about 35,000 people and shares the border with Mexico.  Once considered the undiscovered gem of Belize, this district and its tidy little capital of Corozal Town are quickly rising on the radar of foreign retirees and other expats, and there are lots of reasons why.

One big reason is that it's generally less expensive to live here than are other areas of Belize.  In large part this is because of that border we mentioned with Mexico... the city of Chetumal, Mexico, is just on the other side.  Since Belize has little domestic manufacturing and relatively high duties on imported goods, shopping trips to Chetumal -- to Sam's Club and other big-box stores and supermarkets -- help Corozal residents beat the higher prices on imported goods paid by folks elsewhere in Belize.

Chetumal is also where most in Belize go for medical care from an excellent, modern hospital.  But there's also a small and efficient public hospital in Corozal Town, fine for most general medical needs.

By the way, if you're looking to relax and enjoy life when you move to Belize, you can definitely do that. For just $25 to $30 Belize dollars ($12 - $15 USD) per day, you can hire someone to clean your house, do your yard work and more...

Real estate in Corozal is also less expensive than other places in Belize because Corozal doesn't have the notoriety of more popular destinations like Ambergris Caye or Placencia.  Deals still abound in Corozal for raw land, single-family homes, and residential developments.  Another plus is that this part of Belize gets less rainfall than the rest of the country, a big benefit for fans of dry, sunny days.

If you can see why Belize is such an attractive place to live, you can also see a good reason why people like Elizabeth Warren should think twice before trying to force wealthy and already heavily-taxed Americans to pay even more taxes for any reason, including subsidies for college students who have student loans.

Oh by the way, during 2013, a record number of Americans emigrated to other countries.

Some reading material for Senator Elizabeth Warren

I hope she reads them before she makes another fool of herself.

These essays were all published on my "Conserving the Nation" blog.

Redistribution of wealth, published September 28, 2012.

Taxes and national income, published October 22, 2012.

We're ignoring 200-year-old wisdom, published November 15, 2012.  Benjamin Franklin said that a penny saved is a penny earned.  I simply updated his wisdom for the 21st century by modifying his sentence into the following sentence, which every government official, including one particular Senator, should read and understand.

A trillion dollars saved (by not spending it) is a trillion dollars earned.

I do hope that she understands this principle before I move to Belize.

May 19, 2016 update

May 20, 2016 update.

She is being considered as Hillary's Vice-President.

These are the first two paragraphs of an May 18, 2016 Editorial in the Washington Times.  The links in these paragraphs were in their story.
If the millennials can’t have Bernie Sanders at the top of the Democratic ticket, Hillary Clinton is feeling the burn (if not the bern) to put Sen. Elizabeth Warren at the bottom of the ticket.  This would wreathe the campaign in clouds and tendrils of estrogen, the female “gender” hormone, and give Hillary the opportunity to set two precedents in one.

The Constitution requires that both president and vice president be Native Americans, and Ms. Warren claims to be a Native American as well (born in Oklahoma), descended, at least in part, from the Delaware and Cherokee tribes.  Her claim is in dispute, however, and the only proof she has produced to back the claim she made in a campaign biography in 2012 is her contribution of two “family recipes” to the Pow Wow Chow Cookbook, published by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee, Okla., in 1984.

April 22, 2019 update

On November 6, 2018, Elizabeth Warren, who pretends to represent this state in the U.S. Senate, won reelection against Geoff Diehl, who I supported in many ways.  During the campaign, she denied using a dubious claim of American Indian heritage to win an employment contract as a professor at Harvard University, which is why I often call her "Pocahontas" on my Twitter account (BennyTheKite, named in honor of Benjamin Franklin).

On February 9, 2019, she declared herself to be a presidential candidate.  Link to a New York Times story published that day.

These are the first three paragrraphs of an April 22, 2019 New York Times story.  The link in the second paragraph was in their article.
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who has structured her presidential campaign around a steady unveiling of disruptive policy ideas, on Monday proposed her biggest one yet: a $1.25 trillion plan to reshape higher education by canceling most student loan debt and eliminating tuition at every public college.

Ms. Warren’s sweeping plan has several planks.  She would pay for it with revenue generated by her proposed increase in taxes for America’s most wealthy families and corporations, which the campaign estimates to be $2.75 trillion over 10 years.  In addition to eliminating undergraduate tuition at public colleges and universities, she would expand federal grants to help students with nontuition expenses and create a $50 billion fund to support historically black colleges and universities.

She would eliminate up to $50,000 in student loan debt for every person with a household income of less than $100,000; borrowers who make between $100,000 and $250,000 would have a portion of their debt forgiven.
Any time a debt is forgiven, the lender has lost any part of the principal amount that has not been repaid as well as the interest payments on that debt.
